Why do I need a Will?….

If you die without a Will you are said to die "Intestate". In that event the law decides who will inherit your Estate and in what proportion.

It is a common misconception that the surviving widow or widower inherits everything. This is not always the case and depends on the size of the Estate.

The law (the "Intestacy Rules") make no provision for your lifelong friends, pets, god-children, your favourite charities, un-married partners and Step-children. Unmarried couples living together can be tragically caught out in the event of the death of one of them, and the other may find themself in an extremely vulnerable position. They may have relied on their partner for their income or even a roof over their head. "Common-law" husbands, wives, and other partners cannot inherit unless a Will provides for them.

It is always a good idea to review your Will every 5 years or when there have been any major changes in your life. We are happy to review your existing will and to make sensible recommendations - particularly if you have divorced, married or entered into a Civil Partnership.

Wills are not just about your money. If you have children, your Will can appoint a guardian. if you die without a Will, the decision about where your children live is out of your control.

Do I need a Solicitor?

The choice of who you have prepare or alter your Will is fundamental. A Will is a legal document and what goes in it can have an impact in many other areas of the law (e.g children, tax planning) all of which we can advise you upon.
